Vagabond Days
Down & Out In Brisbane & SydneyI read the classic ‘Down & Out In Paris and London’ by Eric Arthur Blair many years ago. After losing my job with Smart Lake City I decided to live a similar life in order to conserve funds in order to pay off my UK mortgage.
I was told I had to leave the company apartment on the 12th of June as the lease wasn’t being renewed so I spoke to Paul & Krisstie about renting a room in their house in Maroochydore. Alas the day before I was to move out I was told I hadn’t passed my probation even though I had worked for SLC since 11th December 2014.
I left a message for Krisstie saying as I was now no longer employed I wouldn’t be moving in after all but since I needed to tie up some loose ends I was interested in staying one week in exchange for me creating a web site for her. I was surprised when she accepted this offer and she even came to 57 Grand Parade in Kawana to pick me and my belongings up.
After confirming I had been paid by SLC I decided to go to Brisbane to see if any work was available there because I wasn’t keen on living in the beautiful but dull Coast of Sunshine. My good friend Adamski was on hand to collect me from Brissy and even took me to ex Bro-In Law Lachlan’s house in Logon Village so I could store some of my stuff there.
I managed to arrange to stay at The Divorcee’s house on Fairy Street in Marooka for the weekend but had no idea where I would stay after that. My main rule was not to pay rent but see if I could offer any service in exchange for a bed. I went to see ex neighbour Marg in Harrogate Street in Woolloongabba and she said I could stay for a while but an Australian living in South Korea had booked the bedroom I was sleeping in. So I help Marg with computer stuff and even recovered $130 when Facebook had double charged her for the Fish Tank game. I even swept the leaves off her roof and took her to various places in the car as she no longer drives.
I forgot to mention that Adamski had kindly loaned me his car as he had another available. When Marg’s room became unavailable I decided I might as well live in the car until circumstances changed and this became the the beginning of my vagabond days.
